Abstract

MODFLOW is a software for groundwater modeling developed by the USGS. The software is capable of representing conditions related to groundwater flow such as evapotranspiration, recharge, drainage, river interaction among others. Its finite different approach gives the capability to calculate the flow regime with exceptional control on water budget discrepancy.

With MODFLOW one can rely on that the flow going in the model is the same as the flow going out of it, from the regional scale and on cross sections. The latest, open source and most comprehensive pre-processing software is MODEL MUSE, which implements most features of MODFLOW and MT3DMS. QGIS is a open source Geographical Information System (GIS) software with high capabilities for processing the spatial data related to model construction and model output.

This webminar will show different modeling cases of MODFLOW / Model Muse / QGIS related to agriculture, mining, tunneling and wants to show the current capabilities of Open Source Software to address key issues on the groundwater management.

About the speaker

Mr. Montoya is a Civil Engineer graduated from the Catholic University in Lima with postgraduate studies in Management and Engineering of Water Resources (WAREM Program) from Stuttgart University – Germany with mention in Groundwater Engineering and Hydroinformatics.Mr Montoya has a strong analytical capacity for the interpretation, conceptualization and modeling of the surface and underground water cycle and their interaction.

He is in charge of numerical modeling for contaminant transport and remediation systems of contaminated sites. Inside his hydrological and hydrogeological investigations Mr. Montoya has developed an holistic comprehension of the water cycle, understanding and quantifying the main hydrological dynamic process of precipitation, runoff, evaporation and recharge to the groundwater system.
